Default can front gears be noisy while in rwd?

My installer recently replaced my rear gears under warranty (and under protest) and a "whistling" sound under deacceleration instantly vanished - case closed on that issue. Now I've noticed a deep growl under initial acceleration. Once it shifts into second, it's gone. This could be just an agressive exhaust note, but this is a new vehicle and I would think that it would be more subdued. And...the noise seems slightly more mechanical than exhaust. The Jeep is a 2012 Sport automatic regeared to 4.10 running 35" BFG km2s under a 3.5" lift. Is it even possible for front gears to make noise when the Jeep is not in 4 wheel drive?
