Seems like a lot of work and you might end just having a non road worthy rig. Was it so cheap that it is hard to pass up this deal?

YES! If its just basic theft damage then no big deal, but be careful if there is any body work needed. I made the mistake of purchasing a wrecked JK and I have spent as much $$ as I would purchasing the same model from a dealer.
