Default Buying GY Wrangler SAs & Need Advice

I'm ordering a set of the Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armors for the new Rubi for the winter here in New England (the stock MTs are too sloppy on pavement, even when it's just raining - I thought my backend was going to float off the road yesterday when I took an exit ramp). My brother has convinced me to buy a set of wheels for the new tires to make it easy to swap them out for the stock MTs and wheels when spring arrives. I'm thinking about getting the Jeep Offset Steel Wheels (for Winter and Off-Road use). I can get them for $65each. Anybody have any experience with those? I have seen a lot of great wheels in the Forum, but I'm not ready to pull the trigger on an expensive set just yet. I want to get to know the Rubi better first.

Though I must say I like the matte black Liquid Metal Gatlins at only twice the price.

If you're talking about the stock steel wheels (16"x7") that come on the X I would check locally, a lot of people are looking to just give them away.

I can't say anything about the wheels, but I just bought my 3rd set of Silent Armor's the other day. First set lasted 57,000mi, had a set on my truck that had 36,000 on em when I sold it for the JK with no little visible wear, and I just had a new set put on the liberty Saturday.

The tires are awesome. Great choice on your part.

You might try having some additional siping done to the M/T before you give up on them...

here is some info: discounttire.com/dtcs/tireSiping.dos

Thanks for the advice. I'm not going to get rid of the MTs, just taking them off for the winter. Back on in the Spring. I live at the top of a pretty steep hill and get black ice on the road every winter. Several people at the dealership (unsolicited and they told me to buy the tires on-line) suggested getting new rubber. Now I just need to figure out whether I go with a tire/wheel package or just use the stock rims.

I bought a spare set of wheels and tires to swap out for the winter. I got a set of stock Sahara wheels and tires. I paid $350 for all five. You might keep your eye out for a set of them - the Bridgestone tires should do well in the rain.
Here is what my Rubi looks like on the 18's.

Looks kind of funny, but I can live with it until spring.

kafka1983 - I have Goodyear Wrangler Silemt Armors on my X and love them. I've had them on 2 other previous vehicles as well and had no issues. Great in rain, great in snow, gret on the road and fine on the trail. Website pictures don't do them justice though. They really look aggressive in person. I had BFG AT on my X before putting the GY SA's back on. No Regrets.

Thanks Guys. It's always good to get solid validation of my choices, even if I got the idea here at the Forum in the first place.

I don't consider the GY Silent Armors to be "All Terrain". They are much more a road tire than an all-terrain tire. I have about 34,000 miles on my GY SAs on my 2003 Chevy Suburban and am ready to get them off. If I were to rate them on a scale of 1 (worse) to 10 (best), this is how it would look:

Dry pavement = 7
Wet pavement = 8
Snow pavement = 6
Dry, packed, fine gravel = 5
Dry, loose, large gravel = 6
Wet gravel (all) = 3
Snow gravel (all) = 2
Mud = 1

I had BFG A/T on a 2002 Tahoe and I preferred them to the GY SA. The BFGs are truly an A/T tire and perform at a level 7 on most situations, but at an 8 or 9 on loose or packed gravel.

We have a home in the mountains with no paved roads. I feel much safer in my JK with M/Ts than in the Suburban with GY SAs.

If your application is exclusively for pavement with minimal off-road use, then go for it. But if you plan to drive off-pavement for more than 5-10% of your driving, I would select a more suitable tire.
