Buying Bilstein 5100s before lifting?
I’m planning on getting the 3” BDS kit soon, however, I may be able to get the 5100s cheaper by themselves, rather than adding them to the kit.
My 07 Jk has a leveling kit. So, I am wondering if I could get them before and instal. Is this possible?

If you measure the compressed height of the Jeep and it falls within the compressed length of the shock then sure, but make sure you're properly bumpstopped. I ran longer 5100's for a long while on a leveling kit (without adequate bumpstops) and it lead to a shorter than expected lifespan out of the shocks- but- they were already secondhand and a "get me through" until I decided on a proper lift and shocks that matched my travel.

as Karl mentioned, you need to look at shock length both extended and compressed get the appropriate ones.

If I recall, you're not going to be doing anything aggressive offroad, in which case I think you're fine to do what Karl said above. If you were really trying to max out your articulation, I'd argue people are often better to install a lift and THEN measure your cycled suspension so you can really see what the proper lengths you're looking for are. Often time jeeps sit higher than the stated lift height, and the shocks end up being a little undersized and you lose some down travel.

Find the specs, grab a tape measure, and do some quick extrapolating.
These are the 5100's I ran for a short time until I got tired of the stiffness.
27.56 / 16.41 / 11.15 - Front 24-186872
27.36 / 16.96 / 10.40 - Rear 33-186887
So in this case, collapsed lengths of 11.15" front and 10.40" rear. Assuming those are the ones you are buying, have you got enough space/bumpstop? Or as Karls mentioned, will you constantly be using the shocks as bumpstops?

I just read an email from a seller for the lift and he is only charging $130 more to add the Bilsteins. $732 total for the 3” BDS. W/Bilsteins.
Sounds like Ike a great deal
