If you drive mostly street and soft trails you'll be ok for a while. If you do more bumpy stuff, you're on borrowed time. My welds were starting to crack with my 35"s after 3 months. I caught it before any damage occured.

The key to running larger spares on the stock carrier is the installation of properly fitting bump stops. The Daystar bump stops work well. I've been running 315/70R17's for 18 months without a problem. The key, like I said is the bump stops. They will keep the tire from vibrating and flexing the tailgate. Without them the tire will bounce and the resulting shock-loading will induce failure quickly.
For some real-life experience, a buddy of mine ran a 37" spare for two years with no problems. He is now running a 40" Mud Grapler on his stock carrier.
