Default BFG AT KO2 35x12.50R17 vs 315/70R17

I'm about to pull the trigger on new tires for my daily driver JK and am definitely going with AT KO2s, but these two sizes are leaving me with questions.

On the BFG site, this is how they spec out:

Code:
Size Load Speed Rim Width Section Width Diameter Revs/mile Weight
 315/70R17 E S 8"-11" 12.72" @ 9.5" 34.4 604 62.4 lbs
 35x12.5R17 E R 8.5"-11" 12.5" @ 10" 34.5 602 66.5 lbs
So based on this stuff, it looks like the 315's are a little wider and shorter than the 35's, but by literally tenths of an inch. The 315's just came to market, and I don't know why they would make another tire in essentially the same (metric equiv.) size as an existing one, but they did.

Other differences show the approved rim width of the 315's is slightly smaller (8" vs 8.5"), which doesn't make sense if it's even a slightly wider tire. The speed rating is slightly different, the weight is 4 lbs different, yet they are both 10 ply load E tires... and of course prices differ by about $20 a tire. Something doesn't add up to me... am I missing something obvious?

Could BFGs dimensions be wrong? Anyone out there work at a tire shop and have access to both sized AT KO2 tires and can physically line them up and see if they're practically the same size, or find out for sure if one is significantly taller or wider than the other?

yea it really makes no sense. speed rating is a little diff but how often do jeeps go over 100mph for sustained periods. Maybe the 35" is meant for USA made rigs and the 315's made for foreign stuff lol. It really makes no sense to me.

'E' rated tire... that will be a pretty stiff side-wall.

I'd look at the price difference ( if there is one). I just got the same tire in 35s and really like them.

I thought about that, but I just don't have the budget. My lift is only 2.5", so I'd at least need flat fenders, and possibly a regear. And I've only got about $1000 to spend.

I've been looking for a new set of 37's, and found these KO2's at 4WP for 283.74. Great price compared to other sites. Get em, chop your stock flares (until you eventually get flats), and live with the performance (until you get around to gears). See how easy it is to spend other peoples money...

But that's still ignoring C gussets, probably new ball joints, maybe axle sleeves, and I'm still probably leaving out something else that would be recommended with that size... if I could do this "the right way" on the cheap, I would. Big and cheap just don't seem to co-exist when it comes to mods.

Hmmm, I was under the impression that BFG didn't make the new AT KO2 in 315/70-17. I thought it was replaced with the E rated 35x12.50-17.
