I have done a couple of polls on a couple different sites and the majority of the failures to the D30 seem to be the shafts at the u-joints! I will also say that the polls also show the D30 fails far less than people out there make you think. Not that it doesn't break for some unknown reason, but the application of the skinny pedal (down to the floor) seems to be it's biggest enemy!

So is it wise to wait for them to break? Or replace before it breaks (if) and not let it damage other components! My driver side u-joint is already having a lot of play to it.

I would wait for it to break and repair it with a stock axle. There is a reason that the majority of the failures are due to the u-joints. That is because it is built that way. It is built to have the weakest link be the easiest to change. If you beef up your u-joints and axles then all you have that can break is the pinion shaft.
I'd rather break a u-joint than a pinion shaft.
