You don't have to, but it helps if they are only slightly bent.

Usually, when they bend, it is so much that you can see the wheel wobble and hear the brake caliper squeak.

Ok thank you. Wouldn't I notice a wobble when driving though?

Possibly, but the tire absorbs a lot.

Really bent flanges can be felt while driving.

A floor jack and a pair of jack stands, and you will be able to see for sure in less than a few minutes.
