Default Axle Shaft Replacement Question

Alright, I was talking to a buddy of mine about wanting to replace my front D30 axle and go with a D44. He mentioned that instead of doing that I should look at replacing the axle shafts instead. That afterwards it would be in-line with a D44. Is this right? I've tried doing a little research and a few places say "Yes" and a few say "No". Thought I'd bring it to the board for some opinions! Thanks!

The ring and pinion of the D30 are also small, which becomes more of a problem the lower you gear it. For example, the pinion is very small in a 5.13:1 setup like mine. There are also U-joint differences, but that isn't as big a deal, IMO.
