I run both. PJ truss and Nitro sleeves. I did the truss first and added the sleeves later since I had everything apart for ball joints.. the sleeves arent too expensive anyway.

I have about $350 invested in axle armor between truss, gussets, sleeves, skids and diff cover and the housing is just about bomb proof. Not a bad investment in my mind.

Sleeves. $120-$160 depending on brand
Ball Joints.. up to $500 depending of brand..

I was thinking about doing both as well but I was told, A truss does not protect agints deflection as sleeves would. I am doing the sleeves first and see how it goes from there! Also Gussets and I have Nitro Chromolys waiting to be installed!

It really comes down to how hard you really are on the axle and what your ultimate plans are for the axle. If you plan on keeping it as long as it lasts and don't mind spending the money on it then yes go for overkill. Personally we would not recommend Nitro hammer in sleeves. We would recommend a weld in sleeve so it has no chance of moving. Yes he hammer in sleeves are a very tight fit but it is possible for that to change.

Since you plan on having the truss welded on whats another couple spots for it to be welded. If I were doing this I would install the sleeves, then the truss and C gussets, then finish it off with ball joints. We always remove the ball joints when welding the gussets so it makes sense to put in new upgraded joints at that time.

PM us if you want a quote.

Unless 35-spline shafts are wanted? Too many what-ifs and gottcha's to make these axle upgrades an easy decision.

We are talking about a D30 axle here. With the D30 we typically recommend the stock shafts and lots of spares since the pinion is so weak.

I think the op has D30's I have D44
I wheel the Jeep pretty hard...
so I would rather build it to not break on the trail... I don't mind a little over kill but also don't want to spend wasted money of over kill that isn't really needed.. to many other upgrades to be added.

No reason you can't weld the nitro's in as well. I welded mine. And I still have the option to go with 35 splines in the future (though highly unlikely).
