Well.. it's been about 7 months and I now have to lift my gate up for it to close properly. I'll be going with either an XRC of XHD, just trying to figure out which is the better bang for the buck.

So to those of you who have their tires supported by the stock bumper, it's only a matter of time until your gate begins to fail.
So what is changing shape or bending... is it the hinges or the sheet metal tailgate? I'm hoping it's the sheet metal because that can be reinforced a bit easier than the hinges. I don't want to have to mess around with the door alignment either.

Default How about 33's?

I don't mean to hijack the thread, but are 33X12.5's too heavy for the stock carrier as well?

FWIW...

The stock BFG KM's on the Rubicon are 48 lbs.

35x1250x17 G/Y MTR/Kevlar are 64 lbs. So all things being equal, it's another 16 lbs hanging out there on the tailgate.

Disect the physics at will....

Don't forget the weight of the wheel too. You're looking at another 30-40lbs for a rim depending on the size and type. Does anyone know what the lightest 17x9 rim is?

My question also, will 33X12.5X15's be too heavy? Specifically a Pro-Comp 1069 and a Pro-Comp Mud Terrain?

this topic makes me do this and this ...the total weight of my 35" spare is around 120lbs and most people say thats ok but dont take into consideration all the other variables like how many miles you drive and how bumpy the roads are. i drive my jeep daily on rough roads and take it out wheeling about every weekend. the spare was "fine" for a couple months then i started developing the noise....8 months later the noise has turned into a clunk so i have started looking at tire carriers. there is a pretty big difference when it comes to the stock spare mount holding that much weight parked compared to absorbing the shock of bumps when driving.

Hence the "all things being equal." Upgraded tire on the same rim, 16 #'s more.

I am running a 35" spare on my stock tire carrier and have no problems. I have had the Jeep 6 months now and it was on there when I got it.

Jeep has changed the tailgate vent for the '09 and '10 JKs. I wonder if they strengthened the tailgate in any way, and maybe that's why they changed the shape of the vent. Anybody know?
