Americas 2011 Expedition - Need advice/help/opinion

Having lived in Guate I almost fell over laughing ... it can be a very rough country, and I agree with one of the posters who said something about not driving at night. Especially if you are going to be driving through Peten, Guate. It isn't unusual for the gangs to park across roadways with ak's and mg's sitting across their hoods.
Y'all are going to be driving right through my town in Texas and I am seriously considering tagging along for as much as possible. Heck if I can get a friend sold on the idea I might try to do the whole thing. Just wouldn't want to drive all the way back by myself. I've been considering driving back to Guate for the experience, so this trip might just be up my alley.
edit: Oh, and while you are in Guatemala you absolutely must stop in Antigua. There are some great hikes up the volcano's there and the town is just a great sight as well. Of course, if you are wanting to see more of the countryside, Tikal (if you stop here Ixpanpajul is a must see as well) is always fun and there is some amazing spots around Chamuc Champay. If you decide to stop near Tikal I might be able to set you up with a friend while you are there.

Heres the website if you wanna take a gander. They look to be pretty sturdy. I didn't read if you had a 2 or 4 door but if you are running a 2 door this trailor might help carry some of the large amounts of equipment you plan to take on your trip

Fridges:
The Engel is really an amazing product . some of my friends have ad theirs for over 25 years of trouble free operation . ARB now also makes very good & smart fridges too. In our hot Sahara weather both have been performing superbly. WELL worth the money. When in town - well - they have beers and drinks in the garage & plugged in to the wall. They are also of great help when you have friends over and want those beers & wine to be closer to you when in the backyard or garage
Sand Sheets
I sold my aluminum one and got MAXTRAX ... I simply love them.
If you do not spin your tires on them they will last you forever. Just carefully read the instructions .

Very good adventure!!!
I'm in Santiago Chile, so I can help you from this side on any thing you need to know!
I tried something but neither as big as you, I have a friend working for the Chilean Embassy, he invited us to Washington DC, so I wanted to drive from Washington DC to NC, TN (Memphis, Nashville I love Music), Georgia, FL, then back to DC, but something happen in the way, we are waiting twins, so I had to make the trip shorter (I lost the Music, she win Magic Kingdom), we were 3 weeks in the States in October.
In Chile you will be OK, we all drive wranglers
I can go with you a few miles in Chile with my wrangler
Just one thing, you are planning to go from the Chiloe Island to the continent and then to Argentina, and then north, well you are going to loose:
Carretera Austral, 1240 KM (780 Miles) of pure nature, dirt roads, great views, friendly people:

Torres del paine and its lakes:
Anything you need, let me know.

The blog is not updated but we have hundreds of pictures at our facebook page at facebook com/americas2011
And if anyone is interested on tag along or any other private matter, please use contact@americas2011.com
Good trails, be safe and godspeed!
