Default Am I going to regret 4.88s?? Help a gear noob out!!

Ok so Im on the verge of ordering gears and Im back and forth on what size. Im back and forth between 4.88s and 5.13s. I have a 2008 JK X Auto tranny on 35inch MTRs. Im on the highway once or twice a week and theres always the potential for a trip down to like the jersey shore or penn state. Alot of people I know are saying go with the 4.88s because ill be rev'ing out like crazy on the highway if I get 5.13s. Obviously Long Island isnt that hilly soooooo the question is....

Am I going to regret 4.88's or should I get the 5.13s??

I would go with the 5.13's. That way if you ever want to go bigger than 35's you have a some room to work with.

I just got 5.13's and it's nothing crazy. I'm running 35's with the auto on an unlimited and it seems just about perfect, not excessive by any means.

5.13s. Unless you want to go up to 37" tires in the near future, then go with 5.38

I'm hopefully getting my 5.13s soon!

the revving like crazy would be a 6 speed with 5:13's, since you have an auto the 5:13's would be just right for 35's

So much misinformation. You would not be "revving like crazy" with an auto or a 6 speed especially with 5.13s or 5.38s there is a gear chart you can look at that will show you exactly the rpms you will turn with what tires and transmission.

4.88s would be great if you had a TJ, but the JKs motor is much better suited to 5.13-5.38 with 35s. I liked my 5.13s with my 33s (measured 32.1 actual) but I regret not having got 5.38s after running 35s a while now. You will regret like hell not going with a minimum of 5.13s if you plan on 35s. 4.88s are a total waste of money. You will be SICK for spending the cash on not enough gear.

Are 5.38's even a possibility on an X model? I thought the biggest without having to get new carriers was 5.13's?

I went through the same thing your going through figuring out what to do.
I went with 5:13's (just did it) and I don't think I could have gone wrong with the next lower set. But running the dana 30 up front held me up from doing that.
Now my Nitto's are heavy,, heavy tires. So go 5:13's and don't worry about it.

I too was torn between 4.88 and 5.13 gears ratio. I ended up going with the 4.88. The reasons I went with the 4.88 are in my automatic Rubicon.
1. 4.88 are not a total waste of money.
2. The ratio was slightly lower than stock.
3. I test drove some one else’s that had 4.88’s and loved it.
4. 5.13 are not much lower but I did not want to turn that much RPM because it is a daily driver too.
