It's not mass, it's because rolling resistance is not friction. Friction occurs when one material is dragging across the other, not rolling. The friction occurs mainly in the wheel bearing. Rolling resistance is because the MT is less circular. In an extreme sense, picture the mpg's you'd get with a square shaped wheel.
