All terrain vs mud terrain

Not to get in a spitting contest or anything, but even people who wheel on the weekends spend 90% of their time on the road. Especially if its a daily driver. Best case is that we all would have enough money to have a set of MTs for the weekends and AT for the back and forth to work. Anyone who's jeep is a DD would benefit from buying a tire that will fit their type of driving on and off road.
I don't think anyone will disagree that MTs look better and perform better off road. But, there are many of us who don't want the negative side effects of MTs when we are on the road so much.
That being said, I'd rather have MTs, but can't really justify it.
But there has been great strives on tire technology with MTs and they ride better last longer and areole quite then they used to be. As long as there not ran overinflated. I run 37-12.5/17s Pitbull Rocker Radials and as aggressive as they are they are still not that loud.

A Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac is a nice compromise between the two BFG tires you named and it comes with a severe winter weather rating that few offroad tires carry. The KM2 Mud Terrain is actually a fairly tame mud tire, but its not the best for winter weather driving and it does howl a little. The BFG all terrain is a great street tire and fair off road, but it is useless in mud if that matters at all.
I swear by these tires
I will never buy another tire again. PERIOD!
THis past winter proved how valuable the Duratracs are. Many don't realize how Mud Tires don't perform well in the Snow. DUratracs being only one in a handful of M/S rated tires make them an awesome tire choice for most conditions. They are quiet and smooth.

I drive a lot with my jeep. And when I say a lot I mean a lot. I bought 35 in Toyo m/t and I probably put a good 45-50k on them and If I rotated them properly I wouldn't be waiting for my new set of mt's to come in the mail

I'm interested to see what you decided to do. I'm in the same boat. Doing about 40k miles per year and have gone through two sets of ProComp xterme a/ts. They are good off road and on for about 25k miles then suck. Moving from 33s to 35s and want something that will last a long time, be useful off road and still ride good at 30k + miles.

I've had several sets of Cooper Tires; they're great. We just put a set of 285/70/17 Cooper ATP's on our DD '12 Sport and love them. We've been wheeling a couple of times, nothing too serious, but they've been very capable, and ride great on the highway.

I have run Duratracs and am now running KM2s. I will go back to the Duratracs when these are worn out. Duratracs did great off-road and in snow and were GREAT street tires. The KM2s are just plain loud on the road!
