Could you wrap that section of pipe in header wrap to accomplish the same thing? Not sure how much that stuff costs or how it is to work with as I have never used it before.

Yes you could, not sure how that stuff would last covered in mud

I just figured the shield would keep the radiant heat away from everything and allow air to pass between

Yeah that's a good point mud won't dissapate heat real well. That heat shield should work pretty well.
