There is a zerk fitting on the back of the bracket, where the carrier shaft slides into. I use marine grease

Here you go... Grease from day 1 and maintain regularly.

Just grease around the fitting. Mine has brass finish to it.

Looking at it closely, mine has a brass tone as well.

No, not around the fitting... You need a grease gun to attach to the fitting to fill the bracket tube with grease.
