You are correct, the narrow rim will make the total height of the tire taller.

The 4" rule used to be/is an old guide line some shops still apply, but most of them use the recommended rim width published by the tire manufacturers, which has a safety factor built in.

With the proliferation of tall and wide tires many shops will go slightly beyond that range. Running 12.5" wide tires on the stock 7.5" rims is a common practice in this forum.

The correct wheel is an 8" wide wheel if you actually wheel and air down the tires. 10" wide wheel will lose beads easily vs an 8".

As explained to me in the post prior to yours... I was going by older guide lines.

just to put this out there i feel like a 7.5 wheel would be better than an 8 on the trails just for the fact that this weekend wheeling aired down to 12 psi come down a creek side one of my tires almost broke the bead but luckily just burped out a bunch of air
