Default 6 ply or 8 ply tires? Ride quality/control for JK

I'm looking for input on ride and control differances on the 6 ply and 8 ply tires.

I'm preparing to go with 295/70/18 Nitto's A/T's but the dealer insist that they only come in an 8 ply.

My experience with 8 ply's on full size trucks has always been a ruff ride.

Thanks for any responces.

I had the Nitto Terra Grappler A/T in 325/60R18 and they rode pretty rough. I dunno what ply they were though. Somehow my 10ply Mud Grapplers ride softer. They are also such a boxy tire with a really flat tread pattern that every time I hit a puddle of water it was like skipping a rock across a lake. I kept them for about six months and 5k miles or so. I payed like 1200 for them and sold them for 400. Imagine taking a loss like that as a full time student and being super happy with the deal. I think I got the better end of the deal. The hydroplaning and rough ride made me wish I never bought them. But they did look great. BFG A/Ts ride pretty nice usually. Tire pressure can make any tire ride rough.

E rating is a 10 ply.

C= 6 ply.

D= 8 ply.

E = 10 ply.

Unless you'll be doing some SERIOUS rock crawling, the 6 ply will be just fine and ride great.

Ah 10 ply. Well that really explains the harsh ride then. Next time around I think I will be going with 6.

Well the stock Rubicon BFGs are 6 ply. I figure if that's all they come with, that's probably good enough for a mildly modded Jeep too.

I have 8ply KM2s for the summer and 10ply Hankooks in the winter. There is a big difference in ride quaity, weight, and mpg. I have to run a lot less psi in the 10plys to get them to ride even close to the 8ply.

Yeah I run mine at 28 PSI cold and they are still fairly stiff.

my buddy runs some 33's that are a 10 ply, and he runs around ten psi in them and they hold up his tj without a rough ride.... dunno if that helps. if the tire itself can hold up a jeep, you don't need that much psi, and those 8 and 10 ply are designed to hold a lot more weight than the jk, that is why you can get away with a really low psi....

Still though, you pose the risk of unseating a bead even cornering too fast. I wouldn't want to run a tire that low on the street no matter the load rating.
