Default 5.13 Gear Issues

Has anyone else on here had to replace their 5.13 ring & pinion gears b/c the ring gear teeth broke off when you were just daily driving not wheeling?About 8 months ago I had a set of Superior 5.13 gears installed b/c I have 37"tires and needed some extra power to push them. But for some reason I have had two sets of Superior 5.13 Ring & Pinions fail when I was taking off from a stop light the teeth on the ring gear just snapped. What could be causing the gears to fail so easily? I would expect it if I was rock crawling or pulling a heavy load but not just taking off fast from a dead stop.

that is scary looking wow, did either set make any noise? any whine while normal drving before they exploded?

did superior warranty first set? I'd have to think its the set up by the shop mine went at 1800mi but it was completely my 1st shops fault, they never set pinion torque right and never crushed the crush sleeve, also put broken locker parts back in with silicone and never told me.

Just because it broke while on the street does not mean thats where the damage occurred. I have broken quite a few parts over the years while actually on the street and feel fortunate that it decided to break there instead of on the trail.

First ones that come to mind are the t-14 tranny and rear r&p in my 67 commando and the rear carrier in my 85 cj. I have always wheeled my vehicles hard and have had breakage both on and off road.

You should just that it didn't happen on the trail.

edit: OUCH! Just looked at the pics. Nice JK.

Jebus!
I'm guessing faulty batch of gears, something went wrong when they were made

just reread that, both sets blew apart the same way? how long did each set last? I really think its the installer unless they are from the same exact batch

Default I Wondered About the Pinion...

Hi,

A month or two ago I exchanged emails with someone at Superior.

I was concerned with the pinion size for the 5.13s. He said that Superior has not had any gear failures associated with the pinions for 5.13s.

Maybe I should have also asked about the rings. I would think that it would be easier to strengthen the rings as opposed to the pinions.

I noticed you have a Sahara, thus a Dana 30 . . . however it was your ring that broke, howd the pinion look?
