Default 4.88 vs 5.38 with 34's (285/75R17) Auto JKU

I'm been doing some research on this topic and really cant find anything specific to 34" tires.

My number 1 consideration is fuel consumption; second is power and off-roadability. I don't think I'll ever move up to 35's; I like the look and feel of 285/75R17. The Jeep is mostly parked M-F and is primarily a weekend warrior. But the family does use it for long road trips (hence the consideration for freeway driving).

I've read that 4.88's, on the freeway, cause the tranny to constantly "hunt" for the right gear; And the constant down-shift consumes a lot of gas. But I've also read, 5.13's will decrease mpg's versus 4.88?

Any thoughts or recommendations?

Have you looked at the 5.13?

first off, 34's is not a common size and i would steer you away from them just for that. if you're looking at 285's, that would be the better way to go. having said that, 5.38 is WAY OVER THE TOP for the size tire you are looking at. 4.88 will be plenty fine and, so long as you make sure to calibrate your speedo, you will not have the shifting issues you've apparently read about.

in my opinion, 5.13 is still way too much for the size tire he's looking at. even with 35's, they are on the high side.

like i said, even with a set of 35's, 5.13's are on the high side. i personally prefer that setup but, 4.88 is a better match.

I had the same thoughts, but talking to the mechanic at a local shop that specialize in lifts and building rock crawlers, has convinced me to go with 5.13. I have a 4in Pro Comp lift, front and rear bumpers plus winch.....with that added weight and 35in tires, 4.88 could still hunt on the interstate.

I am running 35's with 4.88's and love em, wouldn't have done it differently. If you're worried about your transmission "hunting" for the right gear then perhaps you should look into some tunners or chips. I have the Flashpaq on mine and I get "good" gas milage considering what were driving, 24-25 mpg on the highway. If you're going to do more expidition sort of adventures and not major rock crawling (level 4 and up) then 4.88s is absolutely the way to go.

Just my 2 cents

That is good to know. I have a 2011 JKU so the flashpaq isn't available yet. Still running stock 3.73 so mine constantly hunts and gas mileage sucks....will be putting gears and a tuner in soon.
