Default 4.88 vs 4.56?

I got a 6 speed 2 door on 305-70-17s Goodyear MTRs (34 inch tires ) with lots of heavy aftermarket stuff. Just set up appt to regear and told mechanic I want 4.88s. Am I making right choice? I wheel my rig hard but it is DD. I dont do a lot of highway (2-3 times a month above 60-usually for 2 hours or less one way-5-6 times a year farther distance). I never drive over 70. I live in a very hilly/mountainous area. I will go with 35s next but may run 33s in the winter for 3 months a year.

Did I make the right choice? I was pretty sure of myself after all the research I did but now I am doubting myself.

PS I dont give a shit about gas mileage.

305-70-17s Goodyear MTRs (34 inch tires )
I hear mtr/k's are a bit more true to size than others, but is that the actual 'measured' height, or just the mfg's propaganda?

Regardless, you'll be looking at 2800-2900 rpm @ 70. Maybe a bit high for those that do a lot of higher speed freeway driving, but nothing the engine can't handle. In your situation, though, I think you are making a good choice. In-town won't matter, and you'll have better gearing for all the hills/mountains and for offroad crawling.

And you will also be in great shape when you move up to the 35's!!

They say they measure 34.1 on 8 inch wide rim without weight of jeep. I run lower pressure on the street (25 PSI) so they are not 34. Never measured them. I know that MTRs are supposed to run more true to size over other brands though.

I think you would be pleased with the 4.88’s. The 4.56’s are a little taller and you won’t get that bottom end power that you will with the 4.88’s.

Don't waste your time with the 4.56. They are for other makes and models. The more you read here the more you will realize the 4.88 or 5.13 are the standard for the JK. I went 4.88 with 6spd and am completely satisfied with my choice.

Just sent my check in to pay for 1/2. I am getting regeared to 4.88, rear ARB locker, Sleeves and gussets for the Dana 30 and ARB Diff covers front and rear. This was an expensive week.
