There is no right or wrong answer. Just 'better' choices for each person and their specific needs.
As far as reliability goes, it's all about the install and the usage.
- If your gear guy does his job right, the wear and tear difference between the two sets will be minimal, bordering on negligible.
- If you get on the gas and bounce through rock fields, you are going to destroy whatever gears you get, using whatever axle you choose. Drive like you know you have weak factory axles, and it shouldn't be an issue with either gearset.

If this can help, I have a 6-speed, and run 33s during winter and "small" 35s during summer (34.4).
I did order a set of 4.56 gears from Superior in mid-february. I still haven't received them. The delay was supposed to be 2 weeks...
If they do not ship my order within a few days I will cancell it and order 4.88s.

If you choose 4.88's, check with US Gear. This is currently the only US-made JK gear ratio, and according to a recent post by Dyna, they are made from better steel and to tighter specs than all of the other JK gears coming in from overseas.
I know they are available for the JK 44's, but not sure if they have some for the 30's yet?

4:88's
I went through the same dilema about 4:56 gears finally gave up and went with 4:88's.
Glad I did, 4:56's would not have supported going to 35"s and I would be spending more money when I upgrade

4.56's are a bear to find. Superior is the only one currently making them and they are out of them. Northridge does not have any on the shelf, theirs are all on backorder with Superior. They are telling me the end of June.
On the other hand everyone makes 4.88 and there are tons of them sitting on the shelf ready to ship.
