Default 4.0 liter swap?

Does any manufacturer make a kit to swap in a 4.0 stoker into a JK. A 4.7 stoker would make a nice replacement for the 3.6 in mine. I don't want a Hemi or a POS LS. I want bottom end torque, plus I have a few of them. The whole point is to rip out as much of the electronics, and nanny systems as possible. It would require me to make a new harness, but that wouldn't be bad. An OBD II emulator can take care of the emissions report where I live.

Man... to get rid of all the electronics would be a chore in itself. I also don't think the payoff will be worth the effort.

That is what I was thinking also. I like the JK mechanically from the clutch plate back. Hind sight is 20/20, and I wish I had never bought it. I guess the only option is to get rid of it, and build something pre -OBD II. I'll just use my 1994 XJ as a daily driver. It has had all of it's electronics, and emissions removed. It runs well with a carb, and offenhauser manifold.

I've drove Wranglers with the 4 cyl, 4l inline 6, and 3.6l. I found the 3.6l to be the most versatile of the bunch. What does it not do that you feel the 4.0l would do better?

If you're talking purely offroad performance, I would think some very steep axle gearing would be the best move and a whole lot cheaper/simpler.

Personally I want a Wrangler than can go to where I want to wheel, and the 4.0l just couldn't move a Jeep on the interstate in any respectable way in my opinion.

I have a 2004 GC Lerado with the 4.0 (bought new, always maintained) and its a pig compared to my '14 Wrangler with the 3.6L and my '16 Cherokee TH with the 3.2. The 4.0L is reliable, but a real pig. and for the horrible lack of power it provides, it drinks fuel like a..... pig. I don't have any love for the 4.0L I6 beyond it's proven 200K+ life expectancy. That's going the wrong direction to me, but we all have opinions.

I dislike the electronic control everything on the 3.6. As far as gas mileage, both of my REAL Cherokees get far better gas mileage than my 2012 JK. I get about 14-15 MPG daily driving on the JK. The 94 & 98 XJ's get 17-18 daily driving, and the 98 is an automatic. I am currently building a 4.7 stoker for the 94 2 dr XJ. My friend has one in his XJ, and she pulls from the bottom. Even the stock 4.0s pull from the bottom. The JK can't get out of it's own way below 1500 RPMs. Then it stumbles randomly while driving, either because of the fly by wire throttle or the drivers side cylinder head. Plus it has already thrown an oil pump code once, that hasn't come back yet. I just wanted something reliable, and this JK isn't it. I don't trust it not to fail. Plus my lifted XJ does wheel better, with about the same lift (the JK has more). I am also considering finding another Wrangler pre-99 to build. I do really like the YJ platform. I will never buy a new Fiat product. The Cherokia's, and Renegay's are fine for folks that don't want to really go off road. That is why I do like the JK from the clutch plate back. It does well mechanically back there. The only weakness is the engine, and electronics.

I don't mind the modern engine and find the control systems to be agreeable. I'm with the group that just simply wants my Wrangler to have a V8. I like the modern--I just want more power. Love the 5.7l in the Commander I'm currently driving. Would be perfect for an Unlimited.

i agree with most of that. the 3.6 is nice but i dont trust it as much as my 1.8 in my miata with 213,000 miles on it. there is so much electrical crap on it to fail and when you mod it ends up costing much more because you have to fight the ecu / pcm the whole time

If you're going to spend the kind of money it would take to do that to a JK, buy a TJ, YJ, or CJ & spend it on them.

I think I am leaning toward getting a older Jeep. Hind sight is 20/20, and I really do wish I hadn't bought the JK. I thought I wanted a new vehicle, but I wasted my money. I should have bought an older one, and built a really good rig. Then I would have had money left over for another daily driver XJ. Anyone know of a nice YJ 6 cylinder 5 speed near PA.
