Default 35's on stock spare tire carrie?

Does anybody know if a 35" tire on a 17" rim with 4.75" backspacing will fit on a stock spare tire carrier with a stock rear bumper? I have read there are some strength issues and the tailgate will soon have problems, but can it be done for a short while?
Thanks

I have seen it done. I have also seen one of the adverse effects of doing it. You would probably be okay doing it for a short while, but maybe not. It's hard to say if you would have any damage. When I upgraded to 35s I didn't mount my spare until I installed the new hinge and carrier. That is what I would recommend doing. If you have to have the spare secure it in the cargo area until you have the proper carrier.

It can probably be done but I don't recommend it at all.. I had a 35 mounted on a 17" rim on my first JK and it broke the little device that holds the rear gate open from all the weight... Invest in the teraflex tire carrier or another aftermarket tire carrier to reduce the risk of damage to your tailgate.

I ran this exact set up almost (4.5 BS wheel) for about 6 weeks on my 2008. It didn't do any harm, just take it off and throw it in the back of you go wheeling.

It can bend the tail gate if you leave it on there a while. I wouldn't run it more than 3-4 months and wouldn't leave it in it while off road. But that's just my opinion

Putting aside accumulating damage, one coincidental strong jolt may cause damage.
It may not happen, and it may happen within days. You're going to depend on luck.

Mine started rattling like crazy after only one month and one wheeling trip. Spot welds started going bad, so upgraded to the Teraflex hinge/carrier and that thing is ROCK SOLID. No movement, no noise, nothing.

I ran this setup for over a year with no issues. I eventually swapped it out for a rear bumper with tire carrier, but it was fine for me, even wheeling a few times. If you do a lot of wheeling, I wouldn't recommend it.

I ran mine like this and wheeled quite a bit on first JK for about 3 years. Hinge bushings finally wore out and I had to replace them.

Just make sure you run proper bump-stops to make sure things don't wiggle or vibrate and keep an eye on things.

+1 for teraflex hinge / carrier.

I wouldn't put all that stress on a stock spare mount. I'd leave the spare at home unless going out wheeling I'd throw it in the back.
