35's, 12.5 inch width, 4.5 backspacing Question... Again...

305 width on a 17x9 with ~4.5" backspacing:

Attachment 483636
I think it will be too close to even tell.ine measure a full 12" wide. 1" wider tire means it only sticks out 1/2" more. With your wider flares you should be a-ok.
Sent from some string and a few tin cans.

I'm not sure if this is true or not but is it possible, just like wheel diameters, there is a difference between listed width and actual width? That would explain why some say it will work while others on the forum say no? Just a thought.

Hello All,
I am sure this question has been asked a thousand times on this forum but I'm afraid sometimes the search function isn't all that handy at getting specific information like this. I googled as well but struggled to find the exact information I was looking for.
Here is my dilemma:
In PA our wheels cannot stick out past the fenders (I think technically it is the tread needs to be under a fender). I have a 4 door JK with zenon flat flares that have an additional 1.5 inches of tire coverage. My question is will a wheel and tire combo of a 9inch wheel with 4.5 backspacing and a 35x12.5 inch tire be covered by the flares? Based on what I have been able to gather from others on this site it will be very close but I just was curious if anyone had any thoughts one way or another.
I also accept full responsibility on posting something that has been posted probably a thousand times. Perhaps with the proper tagging and titling of this post someone will be able to find this one!
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciate.
Thanks All!

Great find on the link above! My measurement in my photo validates the thread you found. My rims, while often called 4.5" backspacing for ease, are actually 4.6". Combine this difference with about 1/16" where the tip of the tape isn't perfectly flush and you're good.

Man, the cops in your area must really be nazis! I wish I had the time to bust people's balls over insufficient fender coverage. (not that I would if I did have the time) Out here in OR-Y-GUN, we have fender coverage laws, but no one would bother with an inch or two of tread sticking out past the fenders, unless your begging to be pulled over for other reasons and have an attitude once stopped.
As far as inspections, you guys really have cops inspect your vehicles???? What a foreign concept. We have truck inspections, but those are just to ensure the driver's log books are up to date (mandated sleep times, drive time restrictions, etc...) or overweight load issues. They're only done by Troopers or Deputies who happen to have an interstate running through their jurisdiction. Regular passenger vehicles never get inspected for anything. Is there no crime in your area for these guys to earn their keep?
I run 35x12.5x18's with Bushwacker flats, which stick out a couple inches, and have had several cops compliment me on the look. They're all friends or co-workers, but hey.
Needless to say, I have never, nor will I ever be a hypocrit and scratch someone for insufficient fenders. How CS is that??? I say, get what makes you comfortable and gives you piece of mind. If you have storm troopers in your area, I guess you need to do what keeps you out of trouble. I just can't believe you have cops out there giving the rest of us a bad rap.

Wheels and tires have shipped! With any luck I'll be posting pictures sometime next week.

Hey everyone,
Tires finally came in! Here are my thoughts on the tire coverage for my 295/70/18 tires on wheels with 4.5 BS:
In the rear I feel that I have more room to spare in terms of how much the fenders stick out past my tires. Seems that you could probably put a 12.5 inch tire on there and be ok since it would only stick out about half an inch more on that side. However, the fronts are pretty much maxed out on tire coverage. A 12.5 inch tire would stick out past the extended flare and would make me worry about passing inspections or getting a ticket. Bottom line is that I am very happy with the set up I have atm.
My jeep is my DD and I think she rides great with the new shoes. Don't feel a need to regear atm but probably have lost a lot of use of that 6th gear. Oh well, she makes it up all the hills in the area which is what I was concerned about. I have a superchips programmer so I will try a new tune and see how that helps but again, atm, I do not feel a need to regear for now.
I have no lift and with the flares I have no rubbing on the road at least. Still haven't taken her offroad but I suspect she would rub. I do have a FT 2.5 BB I need to install though.
I need to shrink my file sizes down so I can upload the pictures. Once I figure that out I'll post em up!
