35" Spare

35" Spare
I installed my lift wheels and tires this weekend and need some advice on my spare. I will eventually get either the or fab carrier or a bumper with carrier but that may be a year or two down the road. What will I need to mount my 35 on the factory carrier. I've read about spacers and day star bumpstops but am not sure what I need. FYI its a 35x12.50 mounted on a 20x9 with about 5.75" of b.s. thanks.

Mounting a 35 on the tail gate is going to cause problems all around. You might want to bite the bullet and spring for the bumper tire carrier now. Either that or wait til you can afford both tires and the bumper/carrier. I went to 35's before I had the tire carrier but I carried my spare inside because I got rid of the back seat. My wife's 2011 has Mickey Thompson 33 12.5 17's on it and instead of mounting it on a spacer or offset mounting bracket I just trimmed the door tire bump stops about an inch. It just fit under the third brake light and tight to the tail gate. I am having issues with the tailgate rattling now. I have to adjust it every once in awhile. I'm looking for a lighter 32" spare now.

And then something like the DayStar Tailgate Bumpstops.

When I mounted my 37'' tire on my stock carrier for a while I used the Teraflex extension bracket. But I found out that the tailgate bumpstops were quite long enough to get a solid grip on the tire to prevent it from rattling. I took some radiator hose and cut it so it would go over the bumpstop and fit snuggly against the back of the tire to prevent it from rattling.

IMO Get the new tire carrier/bumper it will be worth it long run. You can cause problems like the rattling stated before and I have also heard the spot welds start undoing and also you can rip the stock carrier off if you offroad and drag the tire on the ground. As said before just cough up the money and buy it or for the time being throw it in the back.

And money by getting a bumper/carrier combo or the or fab carrier. Those bolt on carriers work well for holding larger tires but when the gate is open, all the weight is on the tailgate hinges. Go with a true carrier!
