Default 305/70R16 or 285/75R16?

Can't decide which to go with. Is there any reason NOT to go with the wider tires? Any rubbing problems with the 305s? How far out beyond the flares will they sit (looking at Procomp 97 wheels 16x8 with 4.25" bs)

Thanks

If you do mud or sand, a wider tire will provide better flotation. If you do trails/loose terrain, a narrower tire will give a higher ground pressure providing for better traction. Wide tires on loose terrain will give you pretty poor traction (think steam roller on marbles).

i would like to see some more comments..
with my 265 75 r16 with procomp 98 (16x8 4.25bs) my tires stick out a little..
i would like to know how much they would stick out with 305 70 r16 (keep in mind 4.25bs)

Default 305 or 285

Santa was good to me and I have some funds to put toward new tires....do I go with the 305/65/17 BFG T/A KOs, or the 285/70/17?

the 265/75 is a 10.5" wide tire and the 305/70 is a 12" wide tire. So the tires would stick out about .75" further with the 305/70. Your 305/70 would also be about an inch taller

Both tires would be the same height. But the 305 would be an inch wider. As long as you have 4.5" of backspacing or less (i think the wheels you were looking at had 4.24") then I would go with the 305/65.

my experience is the wider tire aired down gives better traction because of more footprint on the ground, but will lower your mpg compared to the narrow tire. haven't done much mud, but i'm told the narrow tire works better in mud since it will get down to the hard surface below better.

The wider tires typically have larger tread lugs as well as larger voids. This translates in being able to clean out mud easier and to grabbing on to rocks better.
