Default 285/70-17's in Snow

I know the rule books say that you should go skinnier tired for winter because that helps with grip in the snow but I just can't bear to go smaller than my 255's! If I have to drop a *&%^load of cash on tires I want to go wider!!

So does anyone north of say...Kentucky have any issues running 285's in snowy conditions? My local tire shop doesn't recommend it.
