Default 17x8" or 17x9" And Why

I'll be getting some wheels and tires in a few day's. I'm wondering if I should get the wheels 8" or 9" wide. I'll be running 35" tires. The wheels have a B.S. of 4.5" The wheels are Black Rock Steel classic 8s. What's the pros and cons?

The 8" rim will:

1. Force the tire to provide more rim protection
2. Maintain the factory positive offset with 4.5" of backspacing
3. Will be outside the manufacturer recommended rim width range for some tires

The 9" rim will:

1. Allow the tire to provide less protection for the rim, but will create a wider tire footprint
2.Will create a zero offset with 4.5" of backspacing which slightly changes the loading on the axles and bearings (negative offset is worse)
3. Will accomodate a wider range of tire widths with the manuf. spec
4. Will cause the tires to stick out beyond stock fenders

Because I wheel at 8-10 psi in the rocks and 6-8 psi in deep snow, I want a narrower wheel that holds the bead better when aired down.
what he said...Bondsy get the wheels already!!!!

My rule of thumb is to get the minimum wheel width for the given tire I want to run. Some MFGs will say at 8" is too narrow for 12.5 wide tires, while all MFGs that I am familiar with allow 12.5" tires to be mounted on a wheel 9" wide.

If you are going 35 x 10.5 then get the 8s if you are going to 35 x 11.5 then go with the 8s and if you are going 12.5 or wider you may consider the 9s.

I too am about to buy wheels most of the ones I like are 17x9,the tires I plan on running are 32.2 x 11.3 x 17 inch (Cooper S/T)
I am getting mixed opinions about the backspacing etc...from different members
I can not go past the fenders here in Quebec. So I am stuck trying to decide on the following. Wheels with a 4.5''backspace and a-12 offset or a 4.75'' with a -6 offset or go to a 5.47'' backspace which has a 12 offset.

your 32's will be fine on either side. Luckily the pro comp muds fit the 8 inch wide and thats what i went. I do stick out a little maybe an inch but thats not to bad. 4.5 is perfect backspacing. but from what ive read its supposed to be 4.7. I ahev 4.5 no complaints and im running 17 x 8 cragars

I bought 15x8's and I am running the 35x12.50's and I love the way they run and look although the place I bought them wouldn't mount them because of being 8's but alot of places don't even second guess it
