Default Spare Tire Bumpstop Fix.....

So you have bought yourself some new rims and tires and life is good....

Then you take a closer look and see that your tire no longer rests on your bumpstops and you know all the weight is riding on your Carrier....like this

Don't get discouraged, there is an easy fix....pull the spare off....

Run to the auto supply store and buy a thick wall (important that it is thick walled) straight radiator hose that is 1 7/8 ID.....make 2 pieces 3 1/4 inch long or 1/2 inch longer than the gap between tailgate and tire. Your backspacing may be different than mine so measure it.

now slip the 2 pieces over the old bumpstops, you might need to lube them a bit as it is a tight fit......

Now put your spare tire back on and you are done....it will look like this....

I truly do not know if this is necessary or not, but it does seem to take some of the weight off of the carrier......and it makes me feel better.

I hope this helps someone, I want to feel that I have given something back to this board......God knows I have taken allot.

Even though I don't see it taking weight off the carrier since that is what is holding it against the bumpstop, I believe that it might relieve the carrier from some of the vibrations that might have otherwise stressed the mounts. Great thinking!

I could see benefit in doing this -- I like it!
I do agree -- I'm not sure how much weight it would take off the carrier but it does look like it will stop the vibrations, etc. Especially when you slam the gate.

Good one!

Default Spare Tire

I put a new sun in and was getting noise from my tailgate. Same idea but I used raquet balls. Fit perfect for me and eliminated many noises.

Great idea... I'm stopping by the parts store tomorrow on my way home from work.

Cheers,

Have you seen any paint rubbing off from the hose against the tailgate?
