when you trim the rear is the inner plastic removed or is it still left in

I removed mine... based on pics in this thread looks like most people do.

x2 I removed mine as well and just sprayed some rockerguard in there.

You can find it at your local auto parts store. Look for door edge trim. They should have it there.
