Wow...thank you for this write up. Within the last month my wife's JK has lost fuel mileage, throttle response and developed a slightly rough idle (35402 miles). After reading this thread I went to have a look at the TB. Her TB was all gunked up. Spent about 10 minutes spraying, wiping and cleaning the TB, re-installed and no more rough idle. Took it for a spin and the butt-o-meter tells me the throttle response has returned. Will have to wait to see if this brings her mileage back up.

Thanks again
Russ

Nice write-up

Anybody thought about putting in a PCV Catch-Can (link)? I've been thinking about it.
Maybe also put in a valve cover breather filter as well on the other side.

^^ Wow Good response bubba_zenetti!

My TB was absolutely filthy and after cleaning it I didnt feel my Jeep performed any better. Like bubba said though it definitely made me feel better though knowing it was clean.

Thanks for the write, easy to do, couldn't believe how much crap was on the tb. Mine took a little longer to do though. I took off my airaid cold air and tb spacer (which had all sorts of gunk on it too), cleaned the tb, put everything back together, started up and had a horrible high pitched whistle. I let it run for a while and it never went away. I took everything apart again, put it back together and it was gone. Second time around I torqed a little more on the tb bolts. All I can guess is that I had an air leak. It's gone now though. I did end up cracking the plastic by where the bolts go in, so that kinda sucks.

I was intrigued by this thread and cleaned mine. But I am happy to say that my 2008 JK with 33,500 miles was very clean. Even on the inside of the flap and it really didn't need to be cleaned at all. Do you think it has to do with California's strict emission standards and fuels?

A bad PVC valve can cause it or excessive blow by as well.

For what it is worth, almost every car built complies with C.A.R.B.s and EPA standards. It seems California leads the pack in clean air standards since they are a prime example of what tailpipe emissions can do to the air.

Me thinks you have a nice clean running motor and whatever fuel you are using has better additives.
Thanks Bubba. It does run really sweet. I'll keep doing what I am doing.

Thanks for the write up I've always wondered and forgot to ask how to remove the throttle body spacer not as complicated as I thought

I told him I just saw a write up on it and know how to do it. He said do not do it! He said the engine needs to be re-flashed once the TB has been cleaneed or the jeep is likely to stall out. He said he has jeeps towed there all the time and they know right off the bayt that the customer tried to clean the TB themselves. WHile they may have done a fine job on the TB the computer was not addressed and now the engine will not stay running. So not to be a JOYKILL but someone please answer this with knowledge of the computer. I see that others have done it successfully and are on the road, but that is not enough empirical evidence for me, I want to know is there validity to this? Many a times I have been a penny wize and a pound foolish... So please before I do this on both of my Jeeps someone who knows chime in here.

Dan,
That is BS. The only reason to reflash a ECU is to put a new program with new tuning into the stock ECU (I.E. warning light for tranny temps) Otherwise he is talking about resetting the ECU, probabally by pulling the battery cable.

Dealers pay their techs by flat rate. So if they dont have cars coming in to be worked on they dont get paid. Keep this in mind.
