I've seen as short as 1 1/2" such as this one here:

This would probably be the ideal size.

I was retarded and used a boat winch. I put a big "Do Not Touch" and gave VERY clear instructions to my wife and kids.

I just started looking into making mine like this. I think I am going to look into using the unistrut as a rail. Would like to use this lift for other "light" (<800lbs) applications if ever needed and being able to move the load would be nice (like to pull an engine). Anyway!!!! I wanted to let everyone know that I went to Tractor Supply and they are selling the 800lb brake winch for $29.99! It's also online for this price. The people that didn't use brake winch may want to invest in switching at this price since a dropped top could be a couple grand and some injuries. Cheapest insurance I have seen in a long time! Thanks everyone for all the post. Lots of great info. I love unistrut... It's like an erector set for big kids! You can build anything!

Thanks again to this forum and also to HG97TJ for the original write up.

Not sure why the click free will not work.

Default Brake Winch needed...

I too am just starting this project. Hit snag right out of the gate. Tractor Supply now says the Brake Winch (#0189317) is a "clearance item" that is no longer available. So far I have called two local stores and neither one still has any. One store did have a monster one that holds 1500 lbs. but it is like $70.

Any other "safe" suggestions.

I'm also in search for a winch similar to one in TSC for around 30 bucks. Nearest TSC is 50 miles away for me and they don't offer this one for online purchasing and shipping to my place. Any other place I can get one like this for a reasonable price?

Try Amazon or NorthernTool for the Dutton Lainson 800lb brake winch. $48.99
