I put about three good coats on the metal. What am I missing? Should I prime it first? The metal was bare to begin with. Need guidance.
On bare metal you need to use a self etching primer first. May help to slightly rough up the surface before the primer too.

Maybe you need the primer, but this is Rustoleum - ya know, right over the rust paint.

I think the first question would be how long did you let the paint harden? If It is dry to the touch in a few hours, dry to handle in a day - it still isn't fully hard for a week at least.

Depending on what kind of metal you used it may have a protective coating over it. That could be preventing it from bonding with the metal.

I would definitely use the self etching primer. If you have another piece of metal that you can use to try again from scratch, I would try washing it with dish soap, drying it, and then priming it.

Finished mine this morning. I thought about painting it flat black but my wife and son like the 'pop' of the metal color. I soaked it in alcohol to clean any oils off, then lightly sanded and painted with a clear coat to prevent rust.

Default makes a huge differance on the look of the grill

did mine today....i went with a little bigger expanded metal that way i didnt hurt the air flow...means its hot as hell in texas
Oh yeah I had the expanded metal left over from when i built my smoker so all i had to do was get out the old plasma cutter and cut it and I bought primer and flat black paint...all done in just a day....gotta luv it
