today is the first time i washed my jeep since the drilling and i got a bunch of white powdery stuff running down the side. it really stuck on there. i got it off with a thick coat of wax and some elbow grease.

Drilled mine, finally. Watching all the water drain out, I thought to myself, "Self... it's a shame I drilled these.. if I ever broke down in the wilderness, I coulda kept myself hydrated for days with alla that!"

With the water that builds up in there- is there any way for it to leak back inside the jeep? Trying to isolate a leak problem- as well as been thinking about doing this mod for a while, so maybe kill two birds with one stone? Hope so!

Default Another tweak??

Great pics Chuck.

Few observations:

1) I never noticed the factory weep hole (see Chucks pic) until I took off my mirrors.

2) Although drilling a new weep hole allowed a lot of water to drain out, I still had more water draining out after I thought it was all done. I would see this after driving the vehicle around and clearly see water marks down the side doors.

3) I took the mirrors off and observed the mirror gasket holding back water above and below my new weep hole. I do not think that I could have drilled lower or that drilling any lower would have solved this issue. As a result, I cut a small notch in the mirror gasket (see Chucks pic) to allow water that accumulated above and below my weep hole (the one I drilled) to drain completely. Now my mirrors drain quicker and more completely.

4) Which leads me to a question regarding the ineffective factory weep hole. I wonder if the real issue is the mirror gasket and not the hole? Meaning, it appears that the gasket is trapping the water so it cannot properly drain to the weep hole below it. If I was to do this again, I would first notch the mirror gasket just above the factory weep hole and see if that works. If that did not drain properly or fast enough (factory weep hole looks rather small), then I would proceed to add a weep hole above the gasket notch.

Just a thought.

Just completed this mod today on my 2008 as a precation, only 78 miles on the odometer and nothing came out but I did see the marks on the side when I picked it up, it hasnt rained in about a week and the mirrors were folded in at the dealer so the water most likely didnt have a chance to accumulate.

Finally did this today and I did remove the mirrors just to be safe. There was a bunch of mud behind mine. Got it all cleaned out and ready for the next washing/rain. I really hated those white streaks hopes thats the last of them.

This works perfectly for me. Here's a pic of the weep hole plus the gasket notch. Hope it helps.
