The new so called Alpine system is not good by any means. And while still not the best, I was much happier with the Infinty in my 2012. |
Finally got the Kenwood 6990 HD installed yesterday. I also added a 12 inch sub running from the pre outs on it. Its made a world of difference. Using the built in crossover in the HU I took out almost all bass in the front dash speakers and left a bit more in the sound bar speakers. I can crank up the volume now without getting the popping sound in the dash speakers. I have the base turned down on the sub amp to about halfway. Between that and factory sub I'm getting plenty of base and it all sounds great now. The 6990 is def the most advanced HU I've had. Lots of options to learn on it.

Today I ordered the Kenwood KDC-X597 from Crutchfield for my 2007. I am hoping it will outperform my stock RES. I have the base speakers in the front and the Mopar Boston Acoustics in the soundbar with the polyfill. Crutchfield is so good that if I am not happy I know I will just be able to return it. I do not have the Infinity system, so the Bostons helped my system.

Here is a pic of my radio mentioned above in my Jeep, the purple on the display is only because of the flash, it normally looks black, the flash also creates a black to gray contrast that really is not that prominent either.

I believe my audio upgrade is now done. I installed the Kenwood HU last week. I picked up some 77KICK10's this week. So, I pulled my Mopar Bostons out of the soundbar, put the Kickers in the soundbar and moved the Bostons to the fronts. Overall, I am really happy with the sound balance now.
|
Since the 77KICK10's are plug and play I went with them and happy I did. With a tweeter built in the Kickers I think it really rounds out the sound with the fronts, something that was missing before.

I did the Boston accoustics upgrade last weekend together with some Dynamat and poly-fill and the difference is night and day. Easily the best upgrade sound wise / dollar I've ever experienced. Thanks Blade for sharing this!
|
Reading through the whole thread took some time. But just want clarrification on a couple things.
1.) The only difference between the "Kicker" amp from the Nitro and the JK "Infinity" amp is how the internal DSP is setup with regards to the rear/speaker bar speakers? 2.) The Boston Speakers are a direct replacement for the early JK's with the Infinity system? 3.) Your stuffing the baffles completely full of polyfill and getting good results from that? Sorry to ask for a recap but it was a LOT of information to absorb all at once. - Skip |
They seem pretty cheap and worth it how do they sound

Replaced the sound bar speakers this weekend on my '12 JK with Infinity. Went with the Polk dxi650 (on sale at BB for 50 for the pair!). Stuffed the sound bar and subwoofer (still factory infinity) with polyfil and am very happy with the results. Much crisper sound from the polks helped too. But the big difference to me is the subwoofer performance. You can now actually feel some decent punch in the drivers seat. Have Polk components enroute to replace the dash.
If you are questioning the value, I would suggest just trying it. Hook up one new speaker of your choice and compare that speaker to the factory and if you can't hear the difference move on. I would suggest everyone fill soundbar and subwoofer enclosures with polyfil. By far the best 5 dollar audio upgrade I've ever experienced. Thanks to everyone for their input on this thread. It was a great help. Cheers. |
Well, I installed the Bostons yesterday. I say that front drivers side speaker is a mother to get out! Filled them with polyfill batting to eliminate back wave scatter. Was going to dynamat them but the enclosures are rigid enough.
What do I think? It definatly sounds different from my Infinities. Not sure if it's in a good way or a bad way yet. I need to wait for them to break in a bit before making any final pronoucements. They do seem to be a bit clearer but there's this weird dip in the high end where it's like the sound seems to just drop 12db. Not sure what's causing this yet, but I'll keep looking and tweeking. |
I have a 2013 with the Alpine system and the 730n and I just did the Boston install for my 2 fronts. I can tell they are a little clearer but i feel like now there's too much in the 3k range and i lost a little of the warmth and midbass. I will definitely admit that the alpine system sounds muffled compared to the infinity in the '12 and earlier (i've owned both). With the Boston's the muffle is gone but what is now a "clearer" sound is not necessarily a "cleaner" sound. The midrange is more pronounced and vocals more present but the SQ isn't clean, it's a little rough if that makes sense. Im not sure its really an improvement in my particular setup. If i didn't have plans to upgrade to focals i would probably go back to the alpines. Anyway that's just my experience with these, its a cheap experiment and i'd say most beneficial to those with the base system.

Purchased a set of the BA speakers for $25 each thru a friend of mine at the dealer.
The installation of the front speakers including filling the pods with poly fill was about one hour. There is quite a difference in the quality of the sound coming from the speakers. Next week I will probably purchase a set of BA for the sound bar which I have already packed with poly fill. Thanks for the inexpensive upgrade information. The speakers were on back order and didn't show up until this past week. After installing the speakers inside the overhead sound bar and packing with poly fill; I allowed several days for break in. There is a pronounced difference in the audio quality. Very pleased with the performance for the $100 investment spent on the 4 speakers. |
I was going to do this, but I like my infinity system. If I ever upgrade I'm going aftermarket.

Blade, just installed the same mod in my 13 jku sport with base audio.
Great find! Superb improvement for the money, totally agree with your rationale. Thanks! |

I just ran all new speaker wires new speakers all around with 8" sony touch screen took all of 4 hours. :p

Replaced the dash and soundbar speakers with BA's, the difference in quality is quite literally night and day.
Added an Infinity Basslink and it sounds SO much better than the Alpine system that I listened to at the dealership. http://namtaru.com/uploads/2013/jkubostonspeakers.jpg http://www.namtaru.com/uploads/2013/jkubasslink.jpg |

Any ideas on a tweeter up grade? There has to be a mopar part number for that too. I'm sure other models use a similar type. Edit: Found this number, but may be the same as stock 56043194AA |
Im def going to do this to at least the sound bar speakers. I have stock with no sub. crap sounding right now cant stand it. thanks for this post!

I called a local dealer this morning and he quoted me 51.00 for ONE! then I just found them online for 26.00ea plus 12.00 shipping. I hate dealerships. I also bought the poly fill at walmart..will be a nice simple project once they come in. Thanks Blade!

I was not happy with the results as I had to increase the overall system volume just to get the same level of sound that I got with the factory speakers.
Additionally their was a lack of midrange and bass from this setup. I intentionally went with a lower end Polk speaker that required very little wattage hoping to get the most from the infinity amplifier. I had no intentions of upgrading the amplifier, I was simply looking to improve the overall sound. The Polks only lasted two days and they were on their way back to Crutchfield and the factory infinities were back in and I was happy. After a little research I learned that the factory amp was a 2 ohm stable amplifier and the factory speakers carried a 2 ohm load each, I confirmed this with my multimeter. Most likely the Boston Acoustics that were mentioned above are 2 ohm speakers as well, hence the better sound. Now Infinity does make a few aftermarket speakers that are a 2 ohm load and capitalize on amps that can handle this impedance. Unfortunately Crutchfield states that none of these will drop in the factory opening, I have not tried them as I don't want to cut up my new 2012. With all this being said, IMO you will only get a good overall improvement with a 4 ohm speakers IF you upgrade the amplifier as well because the 4 ohm impedance will actually rob power from the stock infinity amp versus a 2 ohm speaker that is tailored to work with the factory amp. I hate that they gave you a Bull crap answer. Prob because they aren't needed to sell Harman Products... Infinity Base and Infinity Upgrade from Chrysler are very Different Quailty... |
Wow! What a huge awesome difference with the BA speakers. Nice and clear with some decent bass. Great cheap upgrade. So glad i did this.
