Exactly !!!!!
This is what I was planning to do with my winter wheels during the off season. This is great alternative if you want run down your OEMs and then buy the real stuff afterwards (eg.wheels and tires). Are the better paints for hard use. Here in the rockies we get dumped with sand and MagChloride occasionally. Any suggestions that might help? By the way, in terms of sanding, could this be done by hand?

Worked Great
I did the exact same routine yesterday, basically on a whim. The hardest part was convincing the girlfriend to let me put the wheels in the dining room to let dry for the rest of the weekend. Cost me about $75 total for paint, primer, posterboard, and jack stands so I could do the whole thing in one shot. I also did the insides too, but didn't sweat making everything there totally perfect. Textured look looks good, scratches are hidden, and I'd much rather have to sand and respray than pay to have a wheel powder coated again. I'll put up some pics once the wheels are back on.

You might even consider painting the round "Jeep" button in the center a contrasting color...
For example, painting it a bright yellow will give it a nice AEV-like appearance.
