NorCal Snow Run 2010: Iron Mountain Road
A bunch of NorCal folks came out this weekend for a snow run up on Iron Mountain Road. It was a really nice spot suggested by NorCal member JKDinker -- the road starts around 4000' and climbs pretty steadily to over 7000', more or less ensuring you'll hit snow somewhere along the way. We had a really nice mix of nice clear weather to start the day, then some pretty heavy snowfall in the afternoon and early evening.
Absentee NorCal member wildnwillin has moved to Vegas, but he is not forgotten:
We had a cabin with 12 people () that actually worked out great. heepinjim treated us to breakfast of biscuits and gravy on Saturday morning, and I completely failed to get a pic of the meal, so here is a shot of my footwear instead:
No snow at the bottom of the road (fire danger very low!)
Airing down at the trailhead:
Larry's lament:
Fiddling with my new ham rig. For those who haven't tried it, ham is totally worth the slight pain in the butt to get the license -- there is really no comparison to CB:
There were snowballs...
... lots of snowballs ...
... and BIG snowballs:
We had many, many recovery operations... here I am preparing to rig the tree saver:
And a view back down the hill from the same spot. Hammerman is behind me, stuck. I am stuck in the lower right. AngryChicken Tim is stuck in the upper left, and Gabe and Jen FlameRed are stuck dead center. At least no one was bored waiting for someone else's recovery
Getting on up in elevation, the snow really started coming down:
Here is the obligatory stuck David (MBATF) shot. He's the one buried up to his bumper in the drift at the side of the road:
Great run guys, I had a blast... maybe we'll have a chance to do it again before it warms up, otherwise can't wait for this stuff to melt so we can get out there this summer
