Your thoughts on lifetime warranty and extended warranties
#11
I have ordered a 2014 JKURX (twice now, but that's another story). Naturally, I was asked if I wanted to purchase the lifetime warranty and I said no. Since I have quite a bit of wait time until my Jeep is delivered I have been reading A LOT on this forum and the Wrangler Forum. My reading has made me start to rethink my decision to pass on the lifetime warranty that was offered at the discounted price of $2800 (I think that's what it was). I have read threads about electronic disconnects going out, wiring harnesses, other electronic stuff, and various other issues that happen after the original 36month/36,000 has expired.
I am wondering what other owners' thoughts on spending the money on this warranty is.
Do you think it's worth it?
Are things like electronics, e-lockers, electronic sway bar disconnects, computer stuff, etc. covered under the lifetime warranty?
If you did purchase it when you bought your new Jeep, have you used it?
Any factual info on this matter is appreciated.

If the cost of the repair exceeds the market value of the jeep then the warranty is void. In 30 years, I'm sure it will cost more to replace an engine (remember, dealer costs/charges) than the value of the jeep, so they won't do it.

I'm pretty familiar with my lifetime powertrain warranty and have found no mention of it being limited to an accumulated value.

You need to ask yourself some key questions. 1. How many years/miles will you keep the jeep after the 3yr/36,000 mile warranty expires? 2. What is the likelihood of any non-power train problem occurring after the warranty expires, but before you sell the jeep? 3. What is the likelihood of any power train problem occurring after the 100K mile warranty expires, but before you sell your jeep? 4. What is the likelihood of any problems encountered in questions 2&3 costing more than the cost of the warranty (aka insurance policy) Only you can answer these questions. I tend to keep my vehicles until they have at least 180,000 miles, so I decided the extra cost of the lifetime warranty was worth it. If I tended to switch vehicles every 4-5 yrs then I would have made a different decision. Unless you are fairly young in years, a good thing to do is to look at your past vehicle buying behavior and expect that your future buying behavior will be similar. If over the last 12 years you have gotten a different vehicle every four yrs, chances are you will do the same with your new jeep and therefore the warranty would not be worth it. If you've only had two vehicles in the last 12 years then maybe the warranty would be the right decision.
I got this exact jeep in the best color (Granite). I didn't go for the extra warranty. I've had a jeep before and they're so easy to work on as long as its not engine related, that I'll take my chances, plus if you're going to mod it you run the risk that the dealer could claim those mods and offroading invalidate the warranty.

It is not the accumulated amount of work you have done on the Jeep... it is the individual claim done on the Jeep... Without powertrain work counting towards that... well, how long till say replacing an axel is worth more than the entire Jeep?
So, if you have the Powertrain warranty separate, then you are probably good to go for a very very long time.
In total I've probably had around $15k or work done on my jeep over the past 4.5 years... all but a few little things have been covered and taken care of... That being said... I do have about 170,000 miles on her... But... I have the Maxcare contract and Lifetime Powertrain... I'm good till my kids want to drive her at the very least...

I'm going to look at it again. It has been awhile. I'm hoping I interpreted it incorrectly as to accumulated value. Either way, mine won't get a 4 sale sign until it is a junk heap. I'd like to put half a million miles on it.

After re-looking at the wording on both my Lifetime Powertrain and my lifetime Maxcare Contract. Neither say that it is the accumulated cost of repairs.
They both say per claim. So... you should be good to go for a very long time. As long as you abide by the fine print... i.e. the 5 year checks...

Really it depends on you. When I bought my 2010 I did not get any extended warranty at all. Factory 36000 or three years. Now my 2010 is all mine, no matter what the repairs cost. Lol. But my jeep isn't a daily driver, the warranty is over, she's in the garage waiting for summer and still doesn't have 25000 miles on her. Also if something does break, I can do the repairs myself, at that point I will upgrade those parts. If that sounds like you, then I would say no to the warranty. If you cann't do major repairs yourself, or if it is your daily driver, """ buy the warrant """ Mechanics are not cheap.
