Honestly you can either get a 2012 sport or you can get like a 2007 rubi or depending how big tires you want to go up to if your staying at 35's u should stay at a rubi if u want to go bigger id say go with a sport and with the money you save you can get new axles and tires so it all depends on what are your plans and how much you want to spend oh and the 2012 i having alot of engine problems so i love my 07 yeah its slow but who cares i didnt buy a jeep to be like speed racer and you can always supercharge it for more power or even a hemi

3.6's are blowing heads so I's stay away from them until the problem is solved. Love my 3.8 personally and yes I know its underpowered but im also running 5.38 gears on 37's so its not bad. Drove a 3.6 and wasnt impressed enough to trade my '11 in on one. Interior was the same as mine. Price on my new '11 was about 5 grand less than a '12. Its all about what you can afford really

I have a 2012 JKU sport now with intentions of doing a fairly decent build including new front axle, gears, lockers, LA lift, and 37"-40" tires depending on what I decide at that point. I had a 2001 TJ before that and had driven many JKUs from 2007-2010 before that also. My personal opinion is that if you want to mod it and mod it fairly quick and you are not rich then an older jeep would be good cause like some said before they had an older jeep they bought for $15k and added $20k to it and it was the same cost as the 2012. Now imaging adding $20k to a $30k 2012 JKU that makes it a $50k vehicle your going to be taking in the would and rocks and doing some damage to. If your ok with with this then go for it. I think a lot of people won't be though. Me personally am the type of person that just does things and worries about it later. So I will take my brand new jeep off roading and if I smack a tree I'll worry about it then.

Your point is exactly what I have been saying. How many times have you read post on this forum where people want to mod thier JK but they only have $500. Or they are looking for the cheapest front & rear bumper combination. Not trying to falme anyone here. We go out an buy this very expensive vehicle and now we have high payment. Then we want to drop thousands of dollars in mods.
Why not buy a 2007-10. I bought a 2007 with 22,000 miles for 15,000. In good shape. I have 20,000 for mods in my budget.
People refer to tranny issues. Just stay away from an auto. People refer to power issues. Install a supercharger and have more power than a 2012. People refer to better suspension. Install a top of the line long arm lift kit and a drag link flip and how much of your better suspension do you really have left.
You can do a lot of mods with 20,000. Do you want to throw that 20,000 at a 35,000 Jeep. If you do then by all means do it. That is half the fun. Doing the mods with your own two hands.
I leave this topic alone now. I know the OP has made there desicion but these post are more for the other people reading that have ot made a jeep purcahse yet. I have both a 2007 and 2012. I love them both. I drive the 2007.
