Wondering about infamous oil consumption 3.8
Hi,
Not discounting the amount of oil consumption reports i read on here about the 3.8, but is it possible that the way u drive the minivan engine has a lot to do with that? Iv got a 2010 with 40k on it and i run synthetic 10w-30.
I have zero oil consumption.
Im wondering if maybe the reports of oil leaks may be coming from people who may mash the pedal on and off road? Doesnt hav to b consistently or frequently, but if u r flooring it around a dirt trail, flooring it to go up a hill or flooring it to pass or change lanes, this behavior would not surprise me if it caused some oil consumption. Obviously the easier u treat something the longer it lasts. Also, im assuming most people know there are differences in how one floors a car. You can be aggressive or abrupt about it or you can be smooth and conscientious. Could this be a major reason why people get oil trouble down the road?
What do you all think?

I drive mine like I stole it....just about every day (91k miles on a 10) with zero oil consumption and 5w-30 oil, so that may throw a wrench into your analysis.

I don't drive like I stole it, but I don't baby it, either. I get what I expect out of the 3.8L/42RLE combination.
No oil consumption here.
But, there is now way the engine is going to run out of oil if it were to unexpectedly start burning oil.
Why? Because I check the oil level every week or so; every fuel stop on a trip.
Some people seem to think that should not be necessary.

I drive normally around town, and only get out to the trails every other weekend. I burn at least a qt every 3k. Not hard on the pedal and don't go over 65mph. It's done it since it was stock and new. Nothing has changed.

Same here. I'm about a quart and half every 3k and I've taken it easy on my rig - on and off the trails. I run the 5-30 in it and just expect it. My 89 YJ did it, guess this one will too. But at 51k miles on my 08, it definitely wasn't expected.

how does your engine run with 10w-30? Ive got an 2010 32k on it and use synthetic 5w-30 and this oil is like water i miss using 10w-30. I change my oil every 3k never had an issue with oil.

My engine runs great. Quiet and very smooth. I have noticed there is about .5-.75 mpg avg increase. I was running 5w-30 synthetic. Maybe it has to do with slightly higher compression..

Hmmmmmmmmmmm maybe I need to change it up. I know run 5w 20 syn. I still need to top it off. have over 40,000 miles on my 2011 and have always had to top off since new.
