winter tires ?

I suspect that there was a thin layer of ice underneath the light layer of snow on the road. it was very cold, ~18*, and it had been snowing all night, but not sticking much because it had been so warm earlier in the week
I hope that is the case, new tires aren't currently in the budget. I have to buy new tires for my fiance's car this week, her OEM Firehawk GTAs are worn and have never been good tires period.

X2......same here. I have no idea what tires to get next. I think I'm looking for the impossible. Good street manners, good in ice/snow/rain, good on rocks without falling apart, C or D rating, affordable, good wear. None meet all of these specs, as far as I've read or heard about.

I might try having mine siped, I hear that helps a lot.

Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armor are excellent winter tires, and more than adequate for anything short of axle-deep mud. These are winter rated tires...
$132 each in 255/75-17 from Discount Tire Direct.

My local tire guy quoted me $129 each for the silent armor installed mounted balanced. I am really leaning towards these tires since they come in stock size so I don't have to buy a spare and the reality is this is a farm jeep so I am in fields and on the road most of the time. No deep mud, lots of snow in the winter in NE Ohio. I wish Revo/ or Duratrac came in stock size. Long story short will these work for my application?

I don't think a BFG AT is a good winter tire. It's an All Terrain tire... Seriously, how can a tire be good in ALL conditions...... depending where u live in Canada... If it's quebec, forget it... you need a real winter tire.. If you're in Toronto, the stock ATs will do...
But then again, if you do a lot of city driving or highways....
Since I go up north to ski every weekend, I chose Hancook studded winter tire...Can't beat that...

Most of the BFG A/T KOs are severe snow rated. I live in the snow belt region of NE Ohio and they are excellent in all winter road conditions. They perform well off-road as well, as long as you keep them out of deep mud. Obviously a studded tire will be a step beyond most non-studded in traction.
