Default Why can't I stop on snowy roads?

I heard this the other day from someone new to snow AND 4wheel drive; " I don't understand why I couldn't stop at the sign, I had it in 4 wheel." Slow down on snowy roads PLEASE!

Don't slam on your brakes when it's snowing. Then you'll stop.

Doesn't matter if you slam on your brakes. That's what ABS is for.

I hope you explained to them that 4wd is only for going, not for stopping.

Down shift and break wayyyyyy before the stop sign in any vehicle. Stopping has nothing to do with 4WD. You can slide and smash in the Jeep just as easy as a BMW or the like.

Um, even with ABS, you won't stop on a dime when it's snowing.

That's correct, but directional control will be much better than without ABS.
You will be able to choose what to hit: the vehicle in front of you, or the snowbank on the side.

haha, I've done that before...had someone pull out in front of me with way too little space, slip and end up stuck directly in front of me So after having the ABS go off long enough I knew I wasn't going to stop in time, I just steered off to the side of the road and plowed into a snow bank to stop. No damage to the Jeep, just put it in reverse once no cars were coming, backed out and continued on my way (after giving the person who pulled out a dirty look that is )

I had to "teach" a friend of mine at work to be careful.

His dad moved to Africa and left him a 4wd expedition. I told him just because you can go better doesn't mean you can stop better. People get very secure driving in 4wd. If you hit a patch of ice while trying to stop it changes your viewpoint vry quickly.

I know that, but you just need to brake sooner... has nothing to do with slamming on the pedal.
