Some of the wheeling out here doesn't even start until you are 50 miles or so from the closest gas station. My wife and I have a wheeling trip planned into the Maze District of Canyonlands National Park. It's 60 miles of dirt road just to get to where the 4x4 section begins, not to mention 40 miles of highway before that. Once you add on the extra gas usage from being in 4 low for much of the 70 miles of wheeling, I'll be glad to have two jerry cans.

My dad grew up in Monticello and knows Canyonlands like the back of his hand. He used to do tours over Elephant Hill in his CJ-5 back in the day (before they paved all the rough spots in the trail with concrete). We're going down at the end of April. I think we'll probably do a trail or two in Moab. What city are you in?

We all filled up in Georgetown and by the time we made it to Rubicon Springs the next day I had already put both cans of gas into the tank. By the time we got to South Lake Tahoe I was getting real nervous about running out of gas. That thing sucked the gas down off road, so yes, extra gas cans are needed in some cases.

RubiCajun makes an excellent point too. Imagine being in the aftermath of a huge natural disaster or major terrorist attack. Even if you're in an outlying area it may be days or weeks before fuel is available. If you have to bug out, that extra fuel could mean the difference between making it out of the affected region or fighting for your life when the hordes of unprepared city dwellers start to get hungry.
