KBB values are not that accurate, it can't account for market flooding as well as it should, resulting in inflated trade in value.

When I went looking for my JK I was finding that the blue book value was far higher than almost every JK I saw for sale. The owner of the dealership I purchased from has been close to my family for 30 or more years. They have always done right by me, and I'll never go to another dealership. Maybe I just get special treatment.

I asked why everything was so cheap and this is basically what I was told roughly.

5 and 10 years ago kbb was a great way to get a value on a used/new car, now it gives owners "super powers" in their mind. The dealerships like I purchased from has to contend with car lots with flat bottom prices, easily 5 or 6k less than what KBB says the resale should be. Places like this also drive the trade in value of vehicles down because they can flood the market fast. Most of them have a service department, and offer decent warranties through their lot. However the sales department is extremely small, and in some cases paid hourly, and not commisson, making their overhead extremely low. Basically if they dealt with KBB values directly they would flat go out of business.

I can't verify this as the god honest truth, but its the truth as I have been told, and I've known the guy my entire life he is a salesman but not a liar. He did let me walk out of the dealership with a brand new 2011 sport s for 18k plus tax title and license .

Almost all of the dealers I went to were several thousand dollars below KBB. The one that offered KBB was way too high on the jeep (clearly over MSRP and refused to show me the invoice). In the end, it's the total deal that you get.

Most offers ranged from $8 to $10K on what KBB said was at least $13K (lowest trade in value) Chrysler 300C. This appeared more in line with the auction price.

As others have said, you get the most money by selling private. Also a good idea to settle on a final Jeep price before dealing with trade in. I'd recommend using the Tread Lightly Affiliate Reward, so the most you pay is FFP, without the need for negotiation.

KBB:
Sale-26,115
Trade-24,275

NADA
Sale-26,625
Trade-23,250

Keep in mind it only has 2000 miles on it. It was one of two 2010 Jeeps that a local dealer still had on the lot almost 6 months into 2011. And its base model. Both sites show that it retails for more than I paid from the lot when it was new so I think the numbers are not very accurate.

When I bought my Jeep and traded in my car most places were hitting directly at 10% below KBB trade in. And I bought the Jeep used for $2,500 under retail blue book so it makes sense both ways I guess.
