Default What's Up With Roof Top Tents?

I've been surfing various off-road sites and have noticed that all have various numbers of posts about roof-top-tents (RTT). Why is anyone willing to spend over 1,000 and as much as 2,000 on a roof-top-tent?

I can see it if you're in Africa but I've been camping for over 40 years and can not see any reason for spending that much money, adding that much weight (most seem to weigh between 100 and 150 pounds) and putting that much baggage just to replace an 80-150 dollar ground tent that works great (and has for decades). So help me realize why there's any need for something so seemingly over-the-top.

Looks neat? People on the internet swoon over pictures posted?

That is all I can come up with.

I agree, they look very cool. That said I just can't see why they cost so much or why anyone would spend the money to sleep on the roof of their Jeep.

Its always better to sleep off the ground. Take the cot vs sleeping bag for example.

Rooftop tent has few benifits.

- No need to clear the ground to set up the tent.
-Most of them has alum frame which all you have to do is unpack, and unfold. you got your sleeping space.
-high off the ground in-case of water, snow or mud.
-away from animals ( Like..lions, and etc in Africa)
-Has padded floor built-in in the tent. Nice n comfy

& above are some of the very few examples why you might need/want one.

I like the roof top tents. I would rather have the trailer with the trailer-top tent instead.
