What is the best oil filter?
#22
Wix here. I can't believe you left out the better oil filters off your poll. I think the poll shows the results. Other is beating all the ones you listed. I use wix because of price and I get them right down the street.

Most of the filters you listed except the K&N are paper junk. If you ever take one apart, I have, you will see how cheaply they are made. Purolator has some higher end filters that are better, but without filter model, this poll is going to be hard to judge. Fram and Fram tough guard are consistently the worst filters made. MOPAR filters are rebadged filters, several different manufacturers, so you never know what you are getting. You could be paying twice as much for a cheap filter.

What brand oil filter do you use?
I found this study that may help. The information has not been updated for a while but it looks like good information.

We had a discussion on Jeepin.com back in 03 about filters and oil. I posted this link back then;
Although there are many articles about synthetic versus dino, here is a pretty good one.
This is written by the same guy who did the filter reports.

This was a small article about oils.
Here is the original filter link prior to it being moved;

You can navigate around this one by clicking the highlited words. Take note of the reccommended filters, and the filters to avoid.
WOW I'm surprised it's still around. I do believe it was written around 8 years ago.

I guess I won't be using the Jeep/Mopar filters anymore !
I remember seeing some where that the Purolator Pure 1 ( painted Blue ) filters are the same as the Mobil 1 filters? any one know if this is true?

Go to the above filter link. Click on the reccommended filters. Scroll through the filters. The difference between Mobil1 and Pure One is there

I ead an article recently about PurePower oil filters:
http://www.gopurepower.com/
They are $200 but you only use one in your lifetime. Aside from never needing to buy a new one, the largest benefit is increased oil flow. At least according to the article.

MOPAR is WIX Today
Just picked up the MO-409AC oil filter from the local Dodge dealer for $5.40 and researched the internet verifying via pictures and text that my MOPAR filter manufactured on 9 Nov 2007 I brought home tonight has the identical look and telltale signs of a WIX filter manufactured by DANA. Same as the one I bought back in Sept 07 manufactured in July 07.
From one of those oil filter study reports refered to previously:
"The telltale signs for a Wix are: 6 large holes for the oil inlet with only the black anti-drainback valve to be seen through them. There are 6 "notches" that hold the gasket in place. The gasket has two colored strips along the edge. Through the center outlet hole, you can see the bypass valve spring. Usually the backplate metal is shiny. "
So for now all the MOPAR, well at least the MOPAR JK filter being sold at Greenbriar Dodge in Chesapeake VA is a WIX. So all the MOPAR is FRAM crap is just that. Go look at a FRAM, the quality of construction is terrible and it looks nothing like the MOPAR filter. But before the internet I used FRAM on everything I drove and never had an engine problem. Hell I drove a 67 Chevy II Nova for 3 years when I was in High School and never changed the filter or oil .
