I went to the beach today because I havent been offroad in a while. I have a couple questions about things I noticed about the JK. At the beach there was a small incline, but steep enough to almost hit the bumper on my 2 door, well I had no problem goin up it with momentum, but if I crawled up it in 4hi, I would need to give it more gas obviously. But heres my problem, when I was going up it, I could only go about 2500 rpms, even when floored, so I couldent go up it. This is in 4HI with ESP off. Something similar happend when I was in 2wd and dug myself into the sand, I planned to pop it in 4 to get out, well it wouldent let me go past 2500 rpm so I had to keep going in reverse then drive and so on to try and get out, again with 4hi, esp off, and trying it with overdrive on and off. Ok one more question, I havent used 4low yet but ever time I shift to it all my drives are like neutral. When I go to 4low my drive is like neutral and everything else.
Ok its late, all of that prob doesnt make sense, but thx for the help anyway!

 

Sounds like a case of the wimpy JK engine to me.

Do you have a manual or auto?

 

Its an auto, but even if its whimpy, why wont it let me go above 2500 rpm? just cuz it sucks? I never had that problem with my old 4.0 :(

 

It's all electronically controlled. I'm thinking it may be the same type of deal as driving on a highway, where you stomp on the gas to pass and get no response at all...

Do you have aftermarket tires and such on it???

Maybe putting the tranny down into 1st will help things?

 

Maybe idk, the only aftermarket things I have is airaid intake and borla exhaust.

Edit: Btw your around boston so maybe you know where I went, I went to sandy neck beach on the cape, ever been there? pretty fun during the winter when nobody is around haha

 

No, I haven't. I've actually been wondering about how to get those cape dune permits to go wheeling. Maybe you can fill me in!

 

The dunes at sandy neck? Or other dunes? For sandy neck at least, you need a sticker for the beach itself and to go up in the dunes, you can either buy a cohoginh license (dont think its much) or you can just sneak up when nobodys lookin haha. My question for you is, where the heck in massachusetts do you offroad? Because I dont know any place!

did you have the ESP completely off? Holding the botton in for more then 5 seconds in 4high? If you just push it for a second, it is only partially off.

And when you tried to put it in 4low, did you mean that it seems like it is just in neutral? If so, you didnt have it all the way in. You really have to yank it back to make sure its all the way in. Our first wheelin trip it popped out because my wife didnt have the shifter all the way back.

 

I had ESP all the way off, it even made a sound, and about 4low, I yanked it all the way back, but everthing was as if it was in neutral, drive reverse everything, but if I think about it again, I dont remember seeing the 4WD light on the dash...hmmmm
