Default Watch for dealers drilling license plate brackets

Fair warning if you're looking to buy a new Wrangler. The dealer I bought my 2011 Rubicon from this past spring (Huffines Plano) is installing their cheesy dealer-branded license plate brackets over the rear plate holders by DRILLING OUT the top right peg with a self tapping screw. The screw actually hits the metal behind the plate.

I found his out after getting my Rubicon home. I took it back to the service dept and to their credit they replaced the factory holder they ruined and touched up the bare metal behind it where the screw hit the body.

Every single one on their lot was done this way. Went back the other day to look for a 2012, and I thought they would have stopped. Nope - hence the warning.

You would think they would know better - that in Texas, it's against the law to have anything covering any part of a Texas license plate, and that includes those stupid dealer brackets also.

When I relocated my license plate, I took off the OEM mount and found a hole for a screw behind it.. It looks terrible and makes me sick to my stomach every time I see it. I got to put a sticker over it or something

This is good advice for sure. When I got my 2010 JKU, I walked out a noticed the salesman just got done drilling in the front plate with his dewalt screw gun. Front plate is required in NY. He was not really very careful nor did he predrill the holes. It was a hack job. For my next JKU, I am considering having him sign a piece of paper that he won't drill out the plate. I mean they love having me sign stuff claiming they explained things to me.

Yup, if I ever order another one from them they will have to initial a doc saying they won't drill it. At least the dealer puff sticker they had on mine came off easily. Still can't believe they're ruining the factory plate holders and dinging the paint with their ghetto screws. Nice little rust spots they get started for free. I picture some toothless guy in the back that they just bring out just to put on the plate covers. "Hi, ma name is Mudd, I'm a here to put on ure plates."

I'v seen dealers put their own plate covers on in NC, even though it's illegal to drive with them.
